May 10 (Reuters) - Hail, snow, a tornado and a tropical storm made it a "severe weather" Mother's Day in much of the center of the United States and on the Carolina coast on Sunday. Tropical Storm Ana, the first named storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season, weakened after making landfall near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but high surf and flooding still threatened the coast.
The race for South Dakota Democratic Party Chair may be turning on where the two candidates stand on abortion. Party officials meet Saturday in Oacoma to select a new chair to replace Deb Knecht of Houghton, who is stepping down. Announced candidates for the chairmanship are Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth of Sioux Falls and retired teacher and former Sioux Falls Education Association president Ann Tornberg of Beresford.
A federal district judge today (Monday) dismissed Democratic Minnehaha County Commissioner Jeff Barth’s petition to preserve evidence in the EB-5 scandal. However, Judge Karen E. Schreier did give Barth’s attorney, Richard Engels, of Hartford, the opportunity to add a new petitioner to the matter, Richard Hulshof, a former employee of the now defunct Northern Beef Packers plant in Aberdeen.

A progressive advocacy group has targeted Gov. Dennis Daugaard for failing to support expanded Medicaid coverage in South Dakota. Anna Galland from MoveOn.org sent a 670-word email to South Dakota MoveOn subscribers and supporters Wednesday. The email begins, “25,480 South Dakota residents are being denied health care coverage because South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is refusing to expand Medicaid.”.
North Dakota State University is suing a Brookings business over alleged violations of the federal Plant Variety Protection Act. The lawsuit concerns “Souris,” an oat variety the university developed. Tuesday, NDSU filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Sioux Falls against Sexauer Discount Farm Services Inc., Jeff Muckey and “John Does 1-25,” essentially for “brown bagging.”.
